Boston Harbor Flounder

May 23, 2003

The late May visit to Boston Harbor was a real eye opener.  Guest Pete Santini, owner of Fishing Finatics (creator of the Santini Tube Lure), was right on the money when he described the great comeback that the Flounder and Cod have made in the harbor.

Despite sometimes breezy conditions the action never stopped and the guys caught over 30 Flounder to 4lbs with several over 2lbs.  Nearly every fish was of legal size.  They also had Cod mixed in up to 10 lbs.  At the end of the day, they put the cameras and Flouner tackle away and took a short run to a nearby Cod spot and jigged up several solid cod up to 40lbs.

If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please send us a message at BostonFlounder@NEAngling.com The boat used was a 185 CC Edgewater powered by a 130 HP Saltwater Series Yamaha. This center console was the perfect platform for this type of fishing.  The 360 degree walk-around access allowed the guys to work their way around the boat to find the most productive pieces of bottom.

This boat was supplied by Bump Wilcox and the folks at New Wave Yacht Sales located in Manchester, MA.  Special thanks go out to Mike Royer who braved miserable conditions to drive the boat from Manchester to Boston in the open ocean.  Once again proving how durable and seaworthy these boats really are.  Click here to locate the Edgewater dealer nearest to you.

The outfit used consisted of a Shimano 400 Catala reel on a 7' MH Compre rod rated for 12-20lb test line.  This combination is perfect for this type of fishing. It was sensitive to feel even the lightest of Flounder bites, yet had enough beef to handle the Codfish that were mixed in.  If you are not familiar with the great line of rods offered by Shimano, click here to learn more.  Click here to locate the Shimano dealer nearest to you.

A variety of rigs were used, the most effective terminal tackle consisted of a 4ft length of 50lb Sufix Invisiline fluorocarbon leader attached via an 80lb swivel to the main line.  A standoff or dropper loop six inches below the swivel was attached to a 4/0 Gamakatsu bait holder hook dressed with a bucktail rivet.  A 2-6 ounce sinker was attached to the end of the leader via a loop (so that the sinker could be changed easily).  Also attached to this loop was a two hook Flounder rig consisting of two offset 10-12inch 50lb leaders each tipped with a 1/0 Gamakatsu bait holder hook preceded by a yellow plastic bead.  If you would like to buy any of the tackle displayed on this page, click here to find a bait and tackle dealer near you.

Special thanks go out to Pete Santini's mom and dad who treated the crew to an incredible home cooked Italian dinner.  Charter captains Dennis DeCarney of "Drop a Line" Charters (617-270-1800) and John Walker of the Paula Marie worked together with Pete Santini to support the shoot and make sure that we were on the fish.  These guys really know the harbor and the surrounding waters really well.  You will not be disappointed when booking a charter with them.

The boat was moored at the Admiral's Hill Marina (617) 889-4002 located in Chelsea, MA.  This is a full service marina with fuel, travel lift, ships store, laundry, showers, ice and even a dive tank refill station.  It is in a well-protected location just minutes from the harbor.  Jim and the staff at the marina were great and they can certainly handle all your boating needs. Accommodations were provided by the Comfort Inn & Suites in Revere, MA.

The hotel was only a few minutes away from the fishing and a short drive from heart of Boston.  The charter captains can easily pick you up right at the hotel.  The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle to and from Logan Airport.  It also boasts all the amenities that anyone could want; indoor pool, exercise room, complimentary continental breakfast, internet access and more.

This is a great place to bring the family as there are numerous activities in and around Boston for those who choose not to fish.  Also located within the hotel is Pacini's restaurant and bar serving fine Italian cuisine.  All of the underwater footage appearing in each show is filmed using underwater cameras provided by Applied Microvideo

They develop and manufacture high quality video cameras and accessories for a wide range of recreational, educational and industrial uses.  There is no better way to explore your favorite spots and get a firsthand look at what the fish are doing.  Complete camera systems start as low as $620.

Much of the footage for this weeks show was filmed using the Model 10 basic system. This system includes everything needed for underwater viewing.  Simply connect the camera to any video monitor or camcorder, turn on the power and you are ready to go.   Click here to view the other model 10 packaged systems.
